Today roofing shingles are often made with a limestone-filled, asphalt coating that contains between 50-70% filler by weight. Reducing the amount of asphalt, and thereby lowering cost, is the primary motivation for the use of limestone in roofing shingles. Shingle durability and flame retardancy are additional benefits.
As you may know, the black streaks and discolouration on your roof is caused by a hearty form of algae called Gloeocapsa Magma. It is an air-borne algae that is spread by the wind. When it lands on a roof it grows and spreads on the shingles. It's an algae that's gorging itself on the powdered limestone filler that's often added to the liquid asphalt in shingles to add weight to them.
